I am a chameleon
You can have me old you can have me young
You can paint me red or the colour of the sun
Cos I am a Chameleon
I see people passing by
As I look them in the eye
I can see inside your soul
Then a thing I can't control
Now I'm talking just like you
And I'm doing what you do
I'm trying much too hard
To play in your back yard
I want to be like you
And all the others too
Cos I am a chameleon
You can have me old you can have me young
You can paint me red or the colour of the sun
Cos I am a Chameleon
1995 Gregorian was a year of questioning. Questioning everything up to that point. I wrote quite a few 'realisation' songs of self analysis, introspection and life in 'the system', realising that things needed to change for me to be my authentic self.
This song for example looks at how we can behave in work related social situations, to blend in to our environment and be like everyone else. It's like acting a role. I realised I'd done that quite a bit up until then, rather than being myself and saying what I really thought I had often just played along with the scene for an 'easy life'. But of course when you're not really being yourself life becomes less and less easy in the long run. All that began to change that year.
Songwriting is great therapy and can really help you figure things out. I didn't want to act like a chameleon any more and started to become more true to myself and say things as I saw them, initially to myself in my lyrics and then out in the world. It took a while to really break free but songs like this were a helpful part of the 'waking up' process for sure.
