I need to know
Pathfinder please
Lawless and lame bad fields abound
I stutter on a summer silence and
Mistily mine, the man in the mud
Please...
Show me the way
Pathfinder please
Halt on the hills, straddle the street
And suffer in a summer silence and
Moodily mine, hang on your heels
Please...
Languid and listless, Debenham blisters
Fretting frustration, A buried cremation
Stutter in silence, Birth to enlighten
Please...
Show me the way
Pathfinder please
Halt on the hills, straddle the street
and suffer in a summer silence and
Moodily mine, hang on your heels
Please...
... is basically about how I felt in the months after my mum died on Valentine's Day, 1999. I spent ages just sitting in my music room staring at the walls trying to figure out how I felt. It felt strange that I didn't shed a tear when she died, but for me I'd already lost my mum when she'd left home during my early teens. I was so glad we'd made up long before she passed away...
I had a "Pathfinder" map of the local (Shotley Peninsular, Great Britain) footpaths there on one of the walls. I couldn't sum up how I felt properly so I made up words around the names of local places on the map, hoping it would "show me the way" during the rest of the year to come. Places like 'Lawford', 'Bradfield', 'Mistley', 'Manningtree', 'Holton' & 'Stradbroke' found themselves distorted and twisted poetically into the lyrics. Then more words came to me while I was in a department store called 'Debenhams' (Debenham is also a Suffolk town), feeling frustrated about the way she died (from an MRSA bug while in hospital being treated for something else...)
Her ashes were buried (...'a buried cremation...') in the church next to her husband
Love you mum
