Has it really been a year
Since the love affair that never was?
I thought the need would disappear
But now I sit and wonder “why, oh why?”
I used to look at you and want to shout
Now I wonder what the fuss was all about
Once my life was crystal clear
Then you came and smashed to shards of glass
Curiosity and fear
Now I sit and wonder “why, oh why?”
Could it be you never were the one for me
You never were the one for me
(Instrumental)
Now I sit and wonder “why, oh why?”
I used to look at you and want to shout
Now I wonder what the fuss was all about
Maybe it was just a phase
Now I'm looking through a crystal glass
Memories so hard to erase
Now I sit and wonder “why, oh why?”
Could it be you never were the one for me
You never were the one for me
So has it really been a year?
Has it really been a year?
Has it really been a year?
Has it really been a year?
Looking back and reviewing things on their anniversaries is always a good cathartic thing to do I've found. This song puts into words the thoughts of once such review back in the early 90s
The song was originally written in G but the melody was too high to sing in that key so I never did much with it at the time. A few years later I played the tune to my mate Hynesie and he, inspired, wrote the lyrics for 'Intra City' to it, and the melody worked well in G for that song, so once again 'Has It Really Been A Year' got left by the wayside.
But I always liked the song and so another decade later I dug it out during 'The SuBtles' sessions and we did a live studio take of it (very badly sung). Once I figured out that I could probably actually sing it if I changed the key to 'D' it once again stood a chance of getting a decent demo, which finally arrived another decade later at The Groove House, Portugal in 2018 Smegorian!
